What is it? Quiz #488

This make has been the subject of the quiz before, but this was an (earlier) type. The manufacturer has been building at one time the most expensive cars in their country and by the time the shown car was built, the factory was located at a real motor city. This gives you enough clues, right? Or perhaps you recognized the car instantly. Anyway, we hope you can tell us a bit more than only the Wikipedia information. Good luck!

The car is a 1915 Lozier roadster. Lozier was one of the top US prestige auto manufacturers between 1900 and 1915, selling cars that retailed between $5000 and 7,000. The cars were first built in Plattsburgh before the company moved to Detroit in 1910. Founder Henry Abraham Lozier began as a sewing machine and bicycle manufacturer before moving into boat engines and finally automobiles. The Lozier was distinguished by its use of ball bearings instead of plain bearings, including for the main bearing. Due to the high prices, not more than 600 cars a year were manufactured. Attempts to move into medium priced cars failed, as did a merger attempt with Ford, and the company failed in 1915.

This is a 1915 Lozier. Lozier started production of cars in 1905 in New York. In 1910 they moved to Detroit making high quality, very expensive cars. Their slogan was 'The Quality Car for Quality People' Lozier were successful in motor racing, their driver Ralph Mulford winning the 1911 Vanderbilt Cup. Mulford in a Lozier was placed second in the first Indianapolis 500 race, controversy over the final result continues today. When sales fell and a Ford take-over deal fell through, the company foundered. The last Lozier was built in 1917.

This is a 1915 Lozier Type 82 Roadster, on display at the Tupelo Automobile Museum, Missisippi. Built from 1915 to 1918 in Detroit, the Type 82 was the last new Lozier model. The 132'' wheelbase chassis was powered by a six-cylinder engine of 36 hp or 61 bhp (depending on sources). In 1915, only 200 Lozier cars were built. Lozier, originally a bicycle and sewing machine manufacturer started building luxury cars in 1905, after various studies - some call it industrial espionage - on European upmarket cars like Mercedes, Panhard, Mors, Darracq and CGV. By 1912 Harry Lozier left his company.

It is a 1915 Lozier roadster. Yet another great American automobile . Lozier started producing bicycles in Toledo Ohio, Henry Abram Lozier wanted to start manufacturing cars so in 1898 produced a steam car in Plattsburg N.Y. By 1905 they showed a car at the New York auto show production was 25 units in 1905. In 1907 racing driver Ralph Muford won more races than any other car of its time. In 1910 the won the Elgin road race and in 1911 they won the Vanderbilt Cup Race and placed second in Indianapolis . Lozier moved to Detroit in 1910 by 1912 H.A. Lozier had been voted out by his stockholders and Harry Jewett was ceo and was also president of Paige -Detroit Motor Co , a light six was introduced in $ 3,200 range but sold poorly. In 1914 when Cadillac brought out a V8 in the $ 2,000 range Lozier was dealt a death blow.

This is a 1915 Lozier Model 82, 6 cylinder. I first saw this car when it was owned by the man who made the Meadowbrook "roadster" body for it. He lived in Delaware in 1969 when I was on one of my early "Lozier quests" for parts. He knew it was a Lozier but I identified it as a model 82 due to the rounded radiator on it. I had an original piece of literature to prove this identification. He had obtained it from a local railroad. It was abandoned on their right of way and they were going to haul it to a junk yard. He obtained it and spent several years rebuilding the chassis as well as creating the body for it. He drove it and enjoyed it for several years. By the way, I maintain the roster of the 41 known Loziers that have survived since the company went out of business in 1915. There are two model 82 Loziers left.
