What is the origin of this early Australian number plate?

Letters to the editor

Hi everyone,

I have an original 1900s-1932 Victoria heritage number plate. It's a metal plate, cast-iron issue, but I am not sure if it's authentic.

On Wikipedia it says that physical plates weren’t issued by the government until 1932. Before that all car owners had to buy them from a third-party manufacturer from 1902 until 1932 and these heritage plates started at 7 and went up to over 100,000 by 1932 .

You can tell a 1932-onwards plate because it has VIC on the side. This plate could be from another state but it could also just as easily be from Victoria.

Any knowledge or other details will be very gratefully appreciated.

I am starting a new journey to find out the origin of this plate.

Thank you.
Paul

I'd say it is an authentic Australian (in the state of Victoria) number plate, as I have a few of these. As you say, these types of plates had to be supplied by the owner with the aluminium letters being riveted onto the steel backing plate. I think this type was first used sometime in the mid-20s? I'm not sure exactly. Before this, they were hand-painted numbers on a plate, or painted directly onto the vehicle. And as you've said, after this aluminium-lettered type, the VIC embossed enamel plates were issued. Number 285000 was the last number-only plate, then the two-letter, three-number type was used, sometime during WW2.

Contact the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association in America. They are knowledgeable about worldwide license plates also. They might have some insight into your plate.
