Now, what would be your pick of Packard?
Seen from a European viewpoint Packard is probably the most desirable make of car. And yes of course we do drive our Model T's and Model A's, and yes we like Chevrolet, and yes we've heard from Duesenberg and yes we know about Chrysler. But Packard has something appealing in its name, in its fame, under its bonnet and of course the highly distinguishable radiator which makes it more attractive than most other Americans. Next week Saturday a wide variety of these powerful, high class cars will be up for auction in Westport, Connecticut. You have the choice of straight eight or twelve cylinder cars. And bodystyles ranging from a 'basic' club sedan , a superior 12 cylinder Sedan, an even larger V12 Limousine, a 1928 'coupe chauffeur' town car, a choice of Speedsters (like this 1930 Boattail Runabout ) up to the grand 1930 speedster Phaeton. Not meaning to give you any guidance in this, but our personal Packard pick is the playboy arrogance of the 1929 645 Dietrich Roadster. Well, you pegged me immediately with the 37 V 12 sedan. But honestly, I'd be very happy with any ordinary prewar senior Packard sedan. My dream is to dive my wife to a nice restaurant in one.

For me the Speedster Phaeton. I built the metal Hubley model kit of that car back in the 1970s and I still have it. Did a nice job of it, too.

The Packard 734 boattail for me, Joris.
George Jepson (who was one of the founding members of the CCCA) for many years owned a Packard 734 boattail as well as the 734 Speedster Phaeton being offered in this auction. Our best man in 1977, Donald R. Peterson, secured a right of first refusal for one of the Speedsters from George some time in the 1950s. In the early '70s, George called Don and said he was ready to sell and that Don could have either the boattail or the Phaeton. Since Don's kids had by that time left the nest, he choose the boattail. "If we still had kids at home then, I'd have probably taken the Phaeton," he told me many years later.
Don still has the boattail and calls it "George" in honor of his long-time friend.
