Where is it? (UPDATE II: the painting of Chrysler building over the entrance)

We all know what it is, but where is this? Exactly! Not a real tough quiz this time.  Just a little test to see how knowledgeable the real insiders are. You have exactly 24 hours as from 01.00 GMT Saturday, December 4th to enter your best answer under 'Add new comment' . The more precise your answer, the better your chance to win the infamous PreWarCar T-shirt. No week of waiting this time! We'll publish all answers on Monday and let you know our decision. Enjoy weekend and be precise!

UPDATE II: thank you, you taught us all an awfull lot about probably the most beautiful skyskraper in the world. If you want to learn/see even more check Google Images and learn how much the building was inspired by features (radiator, mascot &  hubcaps) of the Model '29 Chrysler cars. Of all senders who knew about the existing ceiling mural by Edward Turnbull, only a few came nearer than saying  it is in the Lobby of Chrysler Building(it is a vast lobby!). Most elegant answer was by Robb Stewart who wrote: "...enter the lobby of the Chrysler Building and look up." But he's a jury member. So this weeks winner is Holger Kempf: "You see this part of the painting with your first steps in the lobby, its over the entrance." Congratulations Holger!

UPDATE: Thank you for the m-a-s-s-i-v-e response to this little quiz!!!
To point out  a winner we first have to determine the exact location of the object. Most competitors referred to the building, but this of course is a mural painting depicting the famous building, not the building itself.  In terms of location 'New York' is not precise enough.  Manhattan either, nor the junction of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, not even the umpteen times seen GPS data for the building have proved to come close enough to win.
Competitors referring to the painting are still in the 'the race'. We are in the proces of evaluating responses of Richard Armstrong, Ryan Noble, David Miller, Pjotter, Stuart Penketh,  Holger Kempf, Robb Stewart and Karl Darby. We will be back later.

This is of course the Chrysler Building in New York City. It is located at 405 Lexington Avenue at the junction of 42nd Street, in the Turtle Bay area on the east side of Manhattan. It is one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture, and one of the most recognisable (and best-loved) buildings in NYC. The Chrysler Building was designed by the architect William Van Alen to be the headquarters of the Chrysler corporation. Although it was their headquarters from its completion in 1930 until the mid 1950's, it was never actually owned by the company because Walter P. Chrysler decided to pay for it himself so that his children could inherit it (they sold it in 1947).

Reaching up to a height of 1,047 feet (319 metres) inclusive of the spire, it held the title of the world's tallest building for a mere 11 months before it was overtaken by the Empire State Building in 1931. Despite the speed with which this skyscraper was built (averaging four floors per week), no workers died during its construction.

The characteristic ornamentation of the building is based on features that were being used on Chrysler cars in 1929. The corners of the 61st floor are decorated with eagles which are replicas of the bonnet ornaments, and on the 31st floor the corner ornamentation details are replicas of the radiator caps. Possibly the most distinctive feature of the building is its terraced crown which consists of seven radiating terraced arches. The night-time appearance is just as distinctive – the lighting allows the top of the building to be lit in different colours for special occasions. The Art Deco interior decoration is equally fabulous and involves the imaginative use of exotic woods.

It is part of a mural by Edward Turnbill on the ceiling of the Chrysler Building lobby, 405 Lexington Avenue, between 42nd and 43rd Street in the east side of Manhattan, in the Turtle Bay area of New York, USA. The mural was painted on canvas and was subsequently cemented to the ceiling. A plaque in the lobby describes the mural, which also depicts the "Spirit of St Louis" and the age of flight as well as the construction of the Chrysler Building, "a celebration of energy and man's application of it to the solution of his problems."

Hi pre-war-car-Team - next attempt for the second shirt: It's the marvellous art-deco Chrysler-Building in New York City, USA. The adress is 405 Lexington Avenue, corner 42. Street, Midtown Manhattan – the real exact position is: 40° 45’ 6’’ N, 73° 58’ 33’’ W. Architect was William van Alen. Erected 1928-1930, at this time with 319 m the highest building of the world, in the 67 floor was the “appartment” of Walter Chrysler. By the way: “Chrysler” derives from Johann Philipp “Kreißler” (* 1672) from Guntersblum/Germany (50 km away from my house), arriving in America 1709.
Best wishes

The Chrysler Building is a 77 floor office building at the junction of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue, New York, designed by William van Alen and built between 1928 and 1930. It was financed by Walter P Chrysler himself. It is 1046 feet (318.8m) high and has a 180 feet (55m) stainless steel spire. The design is art deco inside and out. It is not occupied by the Chrysler Corporation and was not climbed by King Kong the giant gorilla as the design did not have suitable handholds.

The painting depicts the top 7 or 8 storeys of the Chrysler Building at 405 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10174. When completed in 1930 it was the tallest building in the world until overtaken by the Empire State Building the following year. However this has nothing to do with automotive history so is probably not the answer you require.

Good morning. This is the Chrysler building located at the intersection of 42nd street and Lexington Avenue in New York City. Ground breaking began in September, 1928, with completion on 20 May, 1930. For 11 months, it was the tallest building in the world, until the Empire State building was completed. Although the building itself has some automotive motifs (hubcaps as adornments, etc.), the building was never a part of the Chrysler corp., but was owned by Walter P. Chrysler, and was planned as a gift for his children. The Chrysler family sold the building in 1947. It is still one of the tallest buildings in New York city.

This is a mural found on the ceiling in the lobby of the Chrysler Building in New York City. Originally entitled “Energy, Result, Workmanship and Transportation," by Edward Turnbull, it was painted on canvas, and was applied marouflage (glued) to the ceiling. It is one of the largest murals of its kind, at 76 by 100 feet. It was restored in 1999 after surviving several renovations including one that cut holes in the mural to add recessed lighting.

After the destruction of the World Trade Center, it was again the second-tallest building in New York City until December 2007, when the spire was raised on the 365.8-metre (1,200 ft) Bank of America Tower, pushing the Chrysler Building into third position. The Chrysler Building is a classic example of Art Deco architecture and considered by many contemporary architects to be one of the finest buildings in New York City. In 2007, it was ranked ninth on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.[7] It was the headquarters of the Chrysler Corporation from 1930 until the mid 1950's, but although the building was built and designed specifically for the car manufacturer, the corporation didn't pay for the construction of it and never owned it, as Walter P.
