Where is Volume II of the Scrapbook or Historical Reference?

Peter Johnston writes: A while ago I obtained an old leather trimmed accounting ledger made into a scrapbook full of ‘vintage’ car cut outs. I read it many times and for a while now it has sat on my bookshelf untouched. I have however recently taken it to 2 VSCC race meetings and the interest it caused was unbelievable. People even recognised some of the famous drivers sitting in the cars ! One man even saw the dashboard of the car chassis he has but had never seen the interior dash and lockable glovebox.  I thought therefore I would send you a couple of pictures and some facts about it.
It is titled “Motors and Accessories Volumne 1. Sept 1923”. There is a torn sepia photo of a young man titled Author (but no name). It has a full alphabetical index listing the 406 car makes in the book on 510 double pages (each pair of pages is numbered twice). I think there were over 4000 scraps in it when I counted them years ago.

There are makes in the... (Read More)

Peter,

Just to add my firm order for a copy of the Scrapbook if you do get enough interest in having copies made.

The style and layout looks very familiar, it is very similar to a series of books published in the mid to late 1970's starting with the American Car Spotter's guide 1920-39 with two further volimes taking it up to 1980. latterly published as "The monstrous American Car Spotters Guide" in 1986, by Tad Burgess.

it is an invaluable work of reference.

Look on page 174 and under Moon you will see exactly the same picture of the red Moon tourer (although in b&w) even to the diagonal line which goes through the rear window.

The coincidence is too great and there must be some connection, if only that they had access to the same picture source

I've seen this book and looked through it many times (Peter is my Son-in-Law). It really is an amazing record and the work involved in compiling it must have been massive. It's the sort of thing that you can imagine many people starting but very few would get past page 1 or 2 never mind actually complete it.

If this is the Peter Johnson with one of the other Calthorpes, I'd be glad to see any Calthorpe pictures?

Hello I am currently rebuilding a 1923 DFP "Petit" but have only a rolling chassis so if any pictures of the this make/model are available in Mr. Johnston's book I should be most interested in a photocopy (for which I will pay). I hope he can help with my project.

I and, I am sure, the other VSCC librarians/archivists would love to see this. If you are coming to VSCC Prescott, bring could you bring it along to the club book stall to show us?
