Where to sell a one-off 1928 REO Wolverine "Period Rat Rod"?

David Williams writes:

"I stumbled upon an estate barn find and purchased the car from the granddaughter of a man who bought it from a wrecking yard in El Paso, Texas. In the dark barn I saw the "V6" and the wrong type of wheels. In fact I saw a cool low-dollar driver. Once I got it home I realized the V6 was a V8 and had been with the car for decades. Parts were tacked on and repaired junkyard dog-style for decades. This was not only a barn find but a true period rat rod! As I researched, I learned we had an obscure model - a Wolverine, serial number BA1722. In my research, I saw no evidence of any phaetons being made or advertised; there is nothing on the internet.

"In '29 the Wolverine became the MATE and there are two or three known MATE phaetons. The REO Club's thoughts are that this a Mate but I think they are wrong - this must be a Wolverine and, if my hunch is correct, possibly one of one. My theory early on was that it was a special ordered for the desert climate where it obvously spent its whole life. The REO Olds Museum is baffled so far by the strange serial number. My research shows 'B' to indicate Wolverine and 'A' to indicate Flying Cloud, which includes a four-passenger roadster... It makes sense to me... Please, any input including the best venue to sell is most welcome."

Well, David, regarding 'best venue to sell', we don't want to be presumptuous, but by advertising the car for sale at PreWarCar.com, you'll have hard time finding a better place, we think. Why not try a first free advert (CLICK)?

I speak most American slang he should of said junk yard style which means a repair made in a junk yard to keep it running using all the worst type repairs that can be made for little or no money dog is the standard guard dos=g in every junk yard or breakers yard to you say. Rat rod is a hot rod not finished just sort of got running and looks like the rats live in it low dollar means low amount of dollars not from bottom of pile. We also call your car your driver, driver being a noun used to mean the driver (operator) of the car now the car itself.

Ya'll are right the phaeton mystery is indeed solved. This is a cut down sedan with the front half of another phaeton welded in.What still intrigues me is the strange serial number .I am nearly certain that the frame is a REO and the number is placed in the correct place however RE Olds museum as well as REO club documents show we should have 1 letter B foe Wolverine and A for Flying Cloud

Where I live that would have been called a junk yard dog. If nicely done it would be a junk yard special. The term rat rod is quite recent and was inspired by rat racers, stripped down motorcycles. There were also old jalopies which were cars from a previous era and usually driven by young guys. All of these added fun and character to the Vancouver area

The EDITOR is obviously biased, this is called "conflict of interest", which is quite difficult to find in print!

Either sell in in CHICAGO, or to me.

COMMENT by Editor:

You are absolutely right Sir. We probably are biased. Still it is very, very likely what we write about the difficujlty to find better venues for selling. Of course he could try Ebay or Hemmings or similar operations but we very much doubt if it would bring him better result for a car like this.

And finally for what it's worth. The blog is not meant for buying or selling. If we would allow that we might as well stop this whole operation. But if that's what you want, ok

My Dad had a 1928 Wolverine that he drove regularly during the 1940s. It was the low priced car of Reo manufacture.

Nice find! as far as I know the Wolverine company stopped in 1908 The grill looks like one on the Wolverine pic I found on here

http://www.allcarindex.com/main-index/car-make-details/United-States-Wolverine-2--Wolverine-Special/

so maybe that came from the same junkyard ;-) Good luck with your research and the car and the sale

and for John Bates: the word "pic" I used stands for picture

Divided by a common language! I often fail to understand 'American' even though I know every word. Eg, what is a 'cool low dollar driver' mean? A driver is a person driving a car! 'Low dollar' might mean 'cheap'? What about 'junk yard dog style' or 'rat rod'? Or am I just an old-fashioned Englishman?

Hello John,

Try to understand what your editor has to take. He not even should understand American slang, but even pre-Brexit English, Down-Under English, not to mention Italo-English, German English, French English. And so on. Just count yourself lucky that you are born English and only have to make the tiniest of tiniest effort to communicate with about half of the world's population...

cheers JB
