Who recognises this engine?
Letter to the editor
This engine came with a car I bought some years ago. From what I understood it is around 13,000cc. There is a crankshaft in it, and pistons, &c., are with it, but I don't know what it is. Who can tell me more about it? Thanks.

I believe Mark Walker is right… we understand that the English Edwardian era guru John Brydon was rebuilding it for an old historic race car, the Renault AK Grand Prix. Much work has been done on remanufacturing the correct engine which was almost complete before ill health interrupted the process. The correct 13-litre engine now needs finishing and installing in the car to complete this most amazing project.

Place the spark plugs into the brass caps over the valves according to usual practice? Yes, the threads still need to be cut there ;-)

It's not new, as I see some areas where rust has eaten away and through the cylinder walls... Other areas have patina that only age can bring. It looks to me as if someone was going to try to rebuild it, cleaned it up a lot, then for some reason stopped working on it.

I agree that this looks quite modern. The cylinder block looks like a welded/riveted structure, instead of the usual castings you would normally expect.

Notice the connecting rod has a modern type 12-point fastener; the rod also has bearing insert tangs. It looks like a stretched modern rod; the piston ring grooves look narrow for something antique. The overall appearance looks pre-First World War, but the condition of the metal patina looks like it was made 10 years ago and then sat around the shop. Post a picture of the crank. It was well made, for sure.

The whole thing looks new to me. Certainly the cylinder blocks look to have been fabricated and the crankcase appears to be of recent manufacture.

It looks a bit like a 1906 Grand Prix Renault.
