These pictures were send to us by Siegfried Otto Hepp, who wrote: “On May 1, 2011 I made this photo of three generations of the Cleer family reunited with an Alfa Romeo RLSS. Grandfather Willi Cleer was a Stöwer dealer in Frankfurt Main. He took part in many events with a Stöwer, and finished third place in the 1926 Grand Prix of Germany in an RLSS with Pietro Bonini, father of Bruno Bonini, as a passenger. The other pictures show him with its 1.5 liter eight cylinder Bugatti, at the opening race of Nürburgring 1927.”
Erwin Tragatsch said that Cleer's Bugatti was a supercharged T39A, but this is not correct. The photos confirm it's a T39 "only" (u/s). As only few had been built, and most of them in confirmed ownership in 1927, this must have been #4603, Goux's works car in 1925 for the GP l'ACF Touring and the Italian GP, and then sold to Edgar Morawitz of Prague. When he emigrated to Spain he took some of his Bugattis with him (if I remember correct the T35B and the T37A), but the T39A obviously was sold. Clear owned it only during the 1927 season, after that he sold it to Albrecht Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Jagstberg.
