The SW38 is widely regarded as one of the most elegant and technically impressive six-cylinder cars produced in Germany in the late 1930s. With its powerful engine, high-quality craftsmanship, and numerous customisation options, the SW38 was aimed at an exclusive, discerning clientele even back then. Only a few vehicles were built, and even fewer have survived the decades.
The coachbuilder Gläser from Dresden played a significant role in this exclusivity.
The Gläser bodies were characterised by balanced lines, precise craftsmanship, and an elegance that remains appealing to this day. Collectors now consider his body designs to be the most beautiful Maybach cars.
Our vehicle is a Maybach SW38 Gläser cabriolet. According to the Maybach register, the car's early history began on 25 March 1938. According to the register, the car was delivered to Director Dr Carlo Wetzell in Berlin. After the war, it is said to have been used in Hamburg as a company car by the Bread and Bakery Products Association.
A new owner appears in the register as early as 1958: an American from Atlanta. Later, the Movie World film company in Buena Park, California, took ownership of the vehicle. It was used many times as a prop in various US television productions there. Following the closure of the Movie World Museum, the Maybach found its way to a car enthusiast in Guatemala, where it found a new home.
Around 15 years ago, our customer purchased the car and had it extensively restored. Some of the work was carried out by the renowned restorer Zinke in Zwönitz.
This rare and beautiful vehicle has an exciting history, partly documented and partly handed down through the register.
